Eat: Lancaster County Food Porn

Cafe One Eight

You probably already knew how much of a localvore I am. I appreciate the importance of buying fresh, buying local, and supporting small business. Combine this focus with a sincere love of food and you have a woman who adores the luxury of eating out as often as possible.

Here are some of my favorite food porn shots from Lancaster, PA.

Upohar

Upohar Upohar is a vegetarian and vegan catering-style company that operates out of East Side Community Kitchen in Lancaster. Pictured above is a combination dish of Nepalese and Iraqi origin. From the bottom and moving clockwise: masoori dal (lentils and onions), kale saag (bitter greens with chunks of garlic & aromatic herbs), margat fasoulia khadra (green beans in a tomato sauce), alu aachar (a potato salad with toasted sesame dressing, cilantro, & red onion), and Iraqi yellow rice in the center. The food is deliciously prepared and I recommend checking Upohar out for your next event. You can read a full review I recently wrote for Fig Lancaster for more information and photos.

The Fridge

The Fridge Take a look at that beautiful slice. This is the seed pizza at The Fridge, one of my personal favorite spots in Lancaster for an excellent selection of craft beer, delicious food, and primo service. I appreciate that the employees at The Fridge aren’t just someone to exchange money with for goods, they are educated on beer and know what they’re talking about. The kitchen is always tweaking their pies to use the freshest local ingredients available and are highly creative, as you can see above. There is a newer artisan cheese plate available too, which I hope to try out this weekend…

Cork and Cap

Cork & Cap    Cork and Cap   Cork and Cap

The Cork and Cap is located inside the Cork Factory Hotel, where Armstrong used to make some of their cork products. They have kept much of the historical feel of the building, with exposed brick walls, industrial decorations and art, and cork partitions in the restrooms. I’ll be writing more about the Cork Factory sometime in the near future but wanted to highlight the food. On the left is their Three-Cheese Macaroni, served with lightly cooked spinach and a tomato relish. I like that the spinach is never over-cooked so it isn’t slimy or limp. Matched with the tart and tangy tomato relish, it is a perfect compliment to the creamy macaroni and cheese. I also got a Cork Burger with this meal and that is topped with caramelized onions, boursin cheese, and roasted red peppers. In the center is a beautiful coconut cake with raspberry and cream filling and fresh fruit compote on the side. To the right is tiramisu, served in an individual cup. The lady fingers were soaked in a perfect combination of booze and coffee without being soggy. Marvelous.

Cafe One Eight

Cafe One Eight We stopped in for breakfast at Cafe One Eight a couple months ago and I was very impressed with the quality of food for the price. This huge croissant was embracing sausage, eggs, feta, and basil pesto in a buttery, flaky display of scandalous love. If I remember correctly, this was between $5-$6 which is a great price considering this sandwich was large enough to split with someone. As expected with a coffeeshop, there is a large selection of coffee drinks on the menu.

POUR

POUR POUR was the first restaurant I reviewed for Fig’s foodie blog. I was highly impressed with the composition and quality of each plate put in front of me, starting with this charcuterie board. I love charcuterie. Give me a complimenting glass of beer or wine and set this in front of me and you’ve made me one very happy individual. All of Chef Aho’s plates are seductive and contain interesting combinations of flavors and textures. You can read my full review at Fig.

Lancaster, PA, is not just a destination for Amish-oglers (although there is plenty of that to do here too). Lancaster is clearly in the process of putting itself on the map for foodies. These are just a couple of the many excellent restaurants in the area. Stay tuned for my review of the Food & Spirits Festival which is happening on Sunday, July 22 at the Lancaster County Convention Center. I’ll be sampling and sharing my food, craft beer, and spirits findings sometime soon.
